What is a thesis statement: The thesis statement is the sentence in your first paragraph that contains the focus of your essay and tells your reader what the essay is going to be about (Typically include all three sub-topics of your paper in your opening paragraph).
Example of a Thesis Statement: Australian Shepherd
Although there are many breeds of dogs, the miniature Australian Shepherd has an interesting history, definitely has marked character traits, and needs certain care to keep that particular breed healthy. (Did you find the three items that will be written about?)
Paragraph 1: INTRODUCTION, HOOK, THESIS STATEMENT
The following is a list of the most common subordinating conjunctions.
however, after, how, till ( or 'til), although, if, unless, inasmuch, as, until, as if, in order that, when, as long as, lest, whenever, as much as, now that, where, as soon as, provided (that), wherever, as though, since, because, while, so that, than, that, before, even if, even though, though
Examples of Introductory Paragraph:
Wolves
Can you imagine hearing the howl of a wolf during the night? A while ago you could hear howls in the northwest, but the wolves were driven out. They were killing livestock for food, so ranchers really hated them. The federal government assisted the ranchers in eliminating the wolf population up through the 1950's. In order to better understand our interaction with wolves we should look at their packs, hunting style, and habitat.

To improve your writing ideas, both in sentences and paragraphs, you need to make sure ideas stick together. The gap between ideas must bridge together smoothly. One way to do this is by using transitions - words or phrases that help bring two ideas together.
